Why does a waterless toilet for campers need a battery recall?

A portable dry-flush toilet sold for campervans, caravans, motorhomes, boats and off-grid cabins has been recalled across Australia. The lithium-ion battery that powers its sealing mechanism can be damaged if charged at or below freezing, creating a fire risk that persists even when the unit is turned off.

The toilet that seals waste in bags

The S1 Dry Flush Sealing Toilet is a portable waterless unit designed for campervans, caravans, motorhomes, boats and off-grid cabins. A motorised mechanism powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery wraps waste into sealed bags. An adapter kit sells the same battery-powered mechanism for use with other CompoCloset toilets. Both products were sold nationally and online between 28 April 2026 and 18 September 2026. Barcode numbers are 5065015394525 and 5065015394518. SKUs are CMP-S9901-W and CMP-S9902. The manufacturer country is listed as United States.

Why the battery can become dangerous

The battery management system does not prevent charging when the temperature is at or below 0°C. The recall notice sets a practical threshold at 3°C.

If the battery has been charged under 3°C or you are unsure, stop immediately

Disconnect the lithium-ion battery from its power source and remove it from the toilet or the adapter kit. If you need help disconnecting and removing the battery, contact Compo Closet Ltd. Check with your local government about requirements for disposal of the affected lithium-ion battery. Do not place the batteries in household rubbish or recycling bins. Do not use battery bins at shops. Charging below that threshold can damage the cells. Once damaged, a battery may overheat and vent smoke, emit toxic gas, or ignite — even in warm weather and even when the toilet is not in use.

Replacement timeline and bypass option

Compo Closet Ltd will provide a free replacement battery with cold charging protection for all affected consumers, expected to be available in December 2026. Consumers can also request a free bypass cable that will allow the toilet to operate using a 12V vehicle or boat battery.

What the notice does not say

The recall does not say how many units were sold. It does not say whether any fires or injuries have already occurred. It does not say whether the replacement battery will fit the adapter kit without modification. It does not say what happens if a consumer cannot wait until December 2026 for the replacement.
