Why was the CZ-8520 electric kettle stopped at the UK border?

The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards published a safety report on 21 August 2026. The electric kettle model CZ-8520 presents a serious fire risk and its import has been rejected at the border.

The hazard in plain terms

A kettle sits on a worktop. Water boils. Steam rises. That is the normal scene. The report on model CZ-8520 describes a different ending. The product presents a serious risk of fire. Two separate faults combine. The kettle is inadequately earthed. The plug fuse is too small and does not meet the requirements of BS 1362. A compliant, correctly rated fuse is required to ensure the safe operation of the product under fault conditions. Should a fault occur, without granular filler the plug may overheat and ignite, causing a fire.

The product does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 or the Plugs & Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994. Both statutes apply to electrical appliances and equipment sold in Great Britain. The report lists the product category as Electrical appliances and equipment – Kettles (Powered). The model identifier is CZ-8520. Product carton identifiers are 1060211 and OCC087533541475. Country of origin is China.

Why the fuse matters

A fuse is a deliberate weak link. It melts when current exceeds a safe level. BS 1362 sets the standard for plugs fitted to domestic appliances in the UK. The standard defines the fuse rating, the dimensions, and the performance under fault current. The report states the plug fuse on the CZ-8520 is too small. A fuse that is too small can blow in normal use. That is a nuisance. A fuse that is too large — or a fuse that lacks the proper filler — fails to interrupt a fault. The report says without granular filler the plug may overheat and ignite. Granular filler, usually sand, quenches the arc when the fuse element melts. Without it, the arc sustains. Heat builds. Plastic melts. Fire starts.

The earth connection provides a path for fault current. If a live wire touches the metal body, current flows to earth. The fuse sees the surge and blows. Inadequate earthing breaks that path. The metal body stays live. The fuse sees nothing. The user touches the kettle and completes the circuit. The combination — no earth, wrong fuse, no filler — removes every layer of protection.

What the border rejection means

The corrective action is import rejected at the border. The shipment never entered the UK market. The alert type is Product safety report. The risk level is Serious. The measure type is Import rejected at border. The PSD notification number is 2608-0190. Notified by Local Authority Trading Standards. The report was published 21 August 2026. Updates to this page show only the original publication date.

A border rejection stops that specific consignment. It does not automatically recall units already sold. The report does not state how many units arrived in earlier shipments. It does not state whether any reached consumers. It does not describe injuries or incidents. The document is a safety report, not a recall notice for products in homes.

What the report tells us about the product

The only identifiers are the model number and the carton codes. The report does not name the manufacturer. It does not name the importer. It does not give a brand name. The product description reads: electric kettle with attached wall plug. The hazard description specifies three failures: inadequate earthing, undersized fuse, missing granular filler. Each failure maps to a specific regulatory requirement. The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 cover the appliance itself. The Plugs & Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994 cover the plug and fuse. BS 1362 is the referenced standard for the fuse. The report treats the missing filler as part of the plug non-compliance.

The notification came from Local Authority Trading Standards. The PSD number 2608-0190 links this report to the UK market surveillance system. The same model could have entered before. The same model could enter again under a different declaration. The report is a snapshot of one consignment on one day. It is not a guarantee that every CZ-8520 in the UK is accounted for.
