Why was a Chinese LED ceiling light stopped at the UK border?

What the border check found

Officials from the Office for Product Safety and Standards published a product safety report on 17 August 2026. The report covers an LED ceiling light made by Jiangmen Hanma Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. The model carries the code MA0099722/PO10229121. On the packaging it is labelled simply as Panel Light.

Carton identifiers

The product arrived in cartons marked G759-MA0009722 and MA0009722. Two more codes appear on the boxes: RVG759-260427-0002-102 and RD 7 UK. The country of origin is China. The measure taken was import rejected at border. The risk level is rated high.

The hazard

The hazard is electric shock. The supply cord is not sufficiently secured. It failed mechanical testing.

Why the cord anchorage matters

During use the cord may become loose. That places strain on internal connections. Live parts can become exposed. The product itself can become live. A user who touches those parts could receive an electric shock.

Regulations and the test

It does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016. Those regulations implement the relevant safety standards for electrical equipment placed on the market in Great Britain. They demand that cords be anchored so that normal pulling and twisting does not stress the internal wiring. The test that the Jiangmen Hanma light failed is designed to simulate that normal use. Because the anchorage gave way, the internal connections were pulled. That is the pathway to exposed conductors.

Shipment status

The corrective action is already complete. The import has been rejected at the border. The notification number is 2608-0104. The case was notified by Local Authority Trading Standards. The report does not say how many units were in the consignment. It does not say whether any of the same model have already entered the UK through other routes.
