Why Does the YETI 3000X Power Station Overheat and What Does the Firmware Fix Change?

A portable power station sits in a garage or a campsite, ready to run a fridge or a medical device. The Goal Zero YETI 3000X is one of those boxes, silver and black, weighing about 92 pounds on a rolling cart.

What makes the board run hot

The recall notice says the circuit board can overheat. It does not say which component on that board runs too hot. A firmware update is the remedy. That tells you the overheating is not a solder joint or a loose connector. It is a control logic problem. The processor or the power-management chip asks for more current than the traces or the MOSFETs can shed as heat. When the load climbs, the temperature follows. Four reports describe the station catching fire, overheating, and smoking. No injuries have been reported. The notice does not say how many of the 46,200 units are still in use.

The station measures 24.4 inches high, 18.5 inches wide, and 22.3 inches deep. Yellow handles flank the digital display. Two built-in wheels and a telescoping handle make the 92-pound weight movable. The Goal Zero logo appears on the front bar of the cart and on a nameplate under the lid next to the words YETI 3000X. Those marks are how you confirm your unit is in the recall.

How the firmware update changes the power station's behavior

A firmware update rewrites the rules the processor follows. It can lower the maximum charge current. It can ramp the discharge limit down sooner. It can insert longer pauses between high-power cycles. The notice does not publish the changelog. It only says the repair is free and available through the Goal Zero application. Owners who cannot run the app must contact Goal Zero for installation at no cost. The update does not replace hardware. If a trace has already lifted or a MOSFET has already degraded, the new code cannot undo that damage. The notice is silent on whether Goal Zero will inspect boards that have already run hot.

Sales ran from May 2020 through August 2025. Retailers include REI stores nationwide and online at Costco.com, Backcountry.com, and Goalzero.com. The price was about $3,000. The importer is Goal Zero of Draper, Utah. Manufacturing took place in China. Recall number 26-712 was posted August 20, 2026.

What the recall tells you to do and what it leaves out

Stop using the station immediately. That is the first sentence of the remedy. Install the firmware update through the app. If the app cannot reach the unit, call 888-794-6250 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mountain Time Monday through Friday. Email support@goalzero.com. Or open a request at recallsupport.goalzero.com/hc/en-us/requests.new. The notice does not say how long the update takes. It does not say whether the station must stay plugged in during the flash. It does not say what happens if the update fails halfway through. It does not say whether a station that has already smoked is safe to update and keep. It does not say whether Goal Zero will offer a replacement if the firmware does not stop the overheating.
