Why did Raspberry Pi Desktop for PC and Mac disappear for years and what changed now?

Raspberry Pi has released an updated version of its desktop environment for standard computers. The new build runs on 64-bit Debian Trixie and includes the Raspberry Pi Connect client for remote access.

The long gap between releases

Simon Long, the engineer who built the original desktop, explains that the team simply ran out of time. After the Bullseye update they had no capacity to maintain the PC version. The organisation makes money from hardware sales, not software licences, so engineering hours went to other priorities. Two or three emails arrived every week asking when an update would appear. The team had no answer.

What the new image actually contains

The download is a live Debian ISO for the amd64 architecture. Debian itself dropped 32-bit support for PC hardware, so the new image is 64-bit only. Most PCs made in the last 15 years will run it. Most Intel-based Macs will run it too. Apple Silicon support in Debian remains experimental, so M-series machines cannot use this build.

Wayland replaces X

The desktop now uses Wayland instead of X. The old lxpanel is gone, replaced by wf-panel-pi. Widgets use a new format, though wrapper layers let developers reuse much of their old code. The Control Centre and a new dock are included. Chromium ships as the default browser.

Raspberry Pi Connect works the same way

The Connect client is bundled. You can control the PC or Mac from the same web dashboard that manages your Pis. Setup differs in one detail: on a Raspberry Pi a unique hardware ID identifies the device automatically. On a PC or Mac you must enter a name manually. That name then appears in the device list. Screen sharing and remote terminal work identically.

How to try it without touching your hard drive

Flash the ISO to a USB stick. Boot the target machine from that stick. When the menu appears choose "run with persistence". Changes you make will be saved back to the USB stick. The same menu offers a "reset persistence" option that wipes the stick back to a clean state. If you decide to keep the system, launch Calamares from the desktop shortcut or from System Tools → Install Raspberry Pi OS. The installer works on both PCs and Macs.

No upgrade path exists

A direct upgrade is impossible. The architecture change from 32-bit to 64-bit requires a complete replacement. Users running the Bullseye image on servers or laptops must back up data and reinstall.

Will there be another update after this one?

The team says it does not intend this to be a one-off. Continued support depends on actual download numbers and usage. Long noted that he has assured management the demand is real. If adoption stays low, future releases become unlikely.
