Why was this extension lead destroyed at the UK border?

A four-socket extension lead made in China never reached British shelves. Border officials seized and destroyed the entire shipment after testing revealed dangerous wiring inside.

What the inspector found inside the casing

The product is a 4 socket extension lead with a 3-pin plug. Model UK-103 comes from Donguan Keben Electrical Appliances Co., Ltd in China. Trading Standards officers examined the internal construction and found wires soldered directly together with no strain relief.

That detail matters because solder alone cannot hold a connection when the cable is pulled or twisted. Over time the joint loosens. The conductor pulls free. The loose end can touch the metal casing or another live part.

How the wiring creates shock and fire risk

A loose live wire inside a plastic housing turns the whole device into a shock hazard.

If a user touches an exposed metal part — the plug pins or a socket surround — they complete the circuit. The report states the product could become live. Arcing at the poor joint generates heat. Heat melts insulation. Melted insulation allows more contact. The cycle ends in fire. The same fault also means the product fails the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016. Marking and labelling improvements are also required. The notice does not say how many units were in the consignment.

What happened to the shipment

The import was rejected at the border. The entire consignment was destroyed. No recall was issued because the goods never entered the UK market. PSD notification number 2604-0074 was published on 19 August 2026. The risk level is rated high. The measure type is listed as destruction of the product and import rejected at border. Local Authority Trading Standards made the notification.

Regulations

The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 set mandatory safety objectives. Products must not endanger people or property when used as intended. Internal connections must withstand mechanical stress. Strain relief prevents tension from reaching the solder joint. Proper terminals or crimps replace bare solder. Clear markings identify the manufacturer, model, and ratings. This extension lead met none of those requirements.

If you already own one

The report covers only the intercepted shipment. It does not confirm whether earlier batches reached consumers. If you have a UK-103 extension lead, unplug it. Do not use it. Check the plug for overheating marks. Check the sockets for overheating marks. Contact the retailer or Trading Standards for advice. The document does not mention injuries or incidents.
