Why Was This 21V Cordless Drill Stopped at the UK Border?

A 21V cordless drill kit from a Chinese manufacturer never reached UK shelves. Border officials rejected the entire shipment because the charger fails basic electrical safety standards.

The Charger That Doesn't Fit British Sockets

A black and red combi drill arrived at a UK port inside a plastic carry case. The kit included a 21V battery and a charger marked DX-2106. Inspectors pulled the shipment before it entered the market. The adapter does not meet the dimensional requirements of BS 1363. That standard governs every plug and socket used in British homes.

The plug pins are the wrong shape or spacing. When a plug does not match the socket, force becomes the only way to connect it. Force bends pins. Force cracks the plastic shroud. Force leaves live metal exposed.

The report states the import has been rejected at the border. No units were released for sale.

What Creepage and Clearance Actually Mean

Inside the adapter two circuits sit side by side. The primary side carries mains voltage. The secondary side feeds the battery at low voltage. Air and insulation must separate them. Creepage measures the shortest path along a surface. Clearance measures the shortest path through air. Both distances fall short in this unit.

Over time the insulation wears down. Vibration, heat, and humidity accelerate the process. When the gap disappears, mains voltage jumps to the low‑voltage side. The user touches the drill body or the battery terminals. The shock can be fatal. The product does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 or the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994.

Missing Parts Inside the Plug

A fusible resistor should sit inside the plug. It breaks the circuit if current spikes. This adapter has none. Without it a short circuit feeds full mains power into the drill housing. The report also flags improvements required to marking and labelling. Documentation must also be improved. The manufacturer is Yongkang MinRui Electric Tool Plant. Country of origin is China. PSD notification number 2609-0132 ties the case to Local Authority Trading Standards.

What Happens to the Shipment Now

The goods remain at the border. They will be destroyed or returned to the sender. How many units were in the consignment is not stated. Whether any identical adapters reached other markets is not stated. If you already own a drill with a DX-2106 charger, stop using it. Contact the seller for a refund.
