Why are squishy bun toys with water beads being recalled in the US?

A toy shaped like a steamed bun and filled with expanding water beads has been pulled from shelves because the beads grow larger than the law allows. If a child swallows one, it can block the intestine and cause death.

What the toy looks like and where it was sold

The product is called Rainbow Mystery Squishy Bun Toys, Model D08004. Each unit is a translucent pink dumpling that contains glitter and water beads. A cartoon face is molded on the outside. The toy sits inside a tan plastic container shaped like a bamboo steamer. Removable package labeling reads “Rainbow MYSTERY” and “SUGAR EDITION.” There are no other markings on the product.

About 7,200 units entered the United States. They were sold at various third-party stores nationwide from May 2026 through August 2026. The importer is OKK Trading Inc., based in Vernon, California. Manufacturing took place in China. The recall was announced on September 03, 2026, under recall number 26-737.

The expansion limit and what it means

The mandatory safety standard for toys sets a maximum size that water beads may reach after expansion. The beads inside these dumplings exceed that limit. When a bead is swallowed, it continues to absorb fluid inside the body. It can grow large enough to obstruct the intestine. The hazard statement lists ingestion, choking, and intestinal obstruction. Symptoms include severe discomfort, vomiting, and dehydration. The risk of death is explicit in the notice.

No injuries have been reported. The recall is preventive, driven by the test result that the beads expand beyond the permitted threshold. The standard exists because earlier incidents with similar beads led to surgeries and fatalities. The document does not say how much larger these beads grow compared with the limit. It also does not say whether the beads are loose inside the dumpling or sealed in a compartment.

Refund steps

Consumers must stop using the toy immediately. They should contact OKK Trading for a full refund. The procedure requires writing “RECALLED” in permanent marker on both the squishy dumpling and its tan plastic container. Then the toy must be thrown away. A photo of the disposed toy must be emailed to recall@okktoys.com.

The notice does not specify a deadline for requesting the refund. Proof-of-purchase requirements are not described. Refund timing is not stated.

Gaps in the notice

It does not state whether the same model was sold online or only in physical stores. It does not mention whether other models from the same importer use similar water beads. It does not explain how the expansion test was conducted or which laboratory performed it. The number of units still in homes is unknown. The recall applies only to Model D08004. Other squishy toys without water beads are not affected.
