Why did a dollar light-up toy get recalled for battery danger?

ABC Trading has recalled about 43,674 light-up glasses, crown headbands, sparkle headbands and ties because the button cell batteries inside can be reached by children. The toys were sold for about $1 each from September 2016 through May 2026 at ABC Trading stores in Los Angeles, other specialty stores nationwide and online at abctradinginc.com.

The toys and how to recognize them

The recall covers four styles of light-up novelties. Each style ships in a large clear plastic bag marked with a white label. That label carries one of three black-font identifiers: 6502 for the light-up tie, HD-10 for the light-up headbands or L-508 for the light-up glasses. Inside the outer bag every single item sits in its own clear plastic sleeve. A second white label on each sleeve reads “MADE IN CHINA, Importer: ABC TRADING, INC.”

Look for the codes. They are the fastest way to confirm whether a product you own is part of the recall.

How the hazard works

The mandatory toy standard requires battery compartments that a child cannot open without a tool. These products fail that test. The compartments holding the button cells can be accessed easily. When a button cell or coin battery is swallowed it can generate an internal chemical burn in as little as two hours. The burn can lead to serious injury or death. No injuries have been reported for this recall.

Button cell batteries are hazardous. The notice states this plainly. Batteries should be disposed of or recycled by following local hazardous waste procedures. The warning applies to the cells inside the toys as well as any loose replacements a household might keep.

What the recall requires you to do

Consumers should stop using the toys immediately. ABC Trading offers a full refund. To receive it the owner must email recallabc@gmail.com a photograph that shows the product being thrown in the trash. The company also lists a toll-free line at 323-581-3688, open 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT Monday through Friday. A recall page exists on the company site under “Recall Information.”

Scale and what remains unknown

About 43,674 units were sold over nearly ten years. How many remain in homes is not disclosed. The notice does not explain whether the battery compartments failed a specific mechanical test or simply lacked a screw. It also does not state whether ABC Trading will destroy the returned inventory or resell it after modification. The importer is listed as ABC Trading Inc. of Vernon, California. The toys were manufactured in China. The recall number is 26-799.
