Can you now play GeForce NOW games in Firefox without installing anything?

NVIDIA has added Firefox to the list of browsers that run GeForce NOW. Starting today, anyone with a recent Firefox version can open play.geforcenow.com and stream supported PC games at up to 1440p and 120 frames per second if they hold an Ultimate membership.

Firefox joins the club

The cloud gaming service now works in four browsers on Windows. Chrome and Edge were already supported. Opera was already supported. Firefox is the newest addition. No dedicated app download is required. Members simply update Firefox, navigate to the GeForce NOW site and log in. The cloud handles the heavy lifting so games do not consume local storage.

Ultimate members see the highest tier: 1440p resolution at 120 frames per second. Performance members get 1080p. Free tier users can try the service with a day pass. If they later upgrade to Performance or Ultimate, the day pass cost applies toward the first membership purchase.

What changes for the person at the keyboard

A school laptop or an office PC can now run demanding titles without a discrete GPU. The browser becomes the only piece of software the user installs. Game updates and patches happen server side. There is no wait for a massive download before the first match.

The experience is not identical to the native app. Some features such as custom resolution scaling or advanced codec selection remain exclusive to the downloadable client. The blog post does not list every limitation. It only states that Firefox support expands access across more devices.

Twelve games arrive this week

Gallipoli leads the batch. The World War I shooter launches on Steam on August 20 and supports 25 versus 25 battles across coastal shores and deserts. Urban maps round out the rotation. Ten historical classes and over fifty authentic weapons are available. Teamwork drives the one shot one kill combat.

Other titles landing throughout the week include Stars Reach and The Sinking City 2, both released on Steam on August 18. DIVE or DIE – Children of Rain, Escape the Backroom, Hell Is Us, High on Life, High on Life 2, Parcel Simulator, Starvester, The Thaumaturge and Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered round out the list. Escape the Backroom and Hell Is Us are available on Xbox and Game Pass. High on Life 2 and The Thaumaturge are also on Xbox and Game Pass. Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered comes via the Epic Games Store.

GeForce NOW availability may vary. Games are onboarded after their store release and added throughout the week. The announcement suggests watching GeForce NOW channels and GFN Thursdays for updates on specific titles.

The practical catch

Firefox support works on Windows only. Mac and Linux users still need the native app or a supported browser on those platforms. ChromeOS users face the same requirement. The blog does not mention a timeline for other operating systems.

Keyboard and mouse input passes through the browser. Controller support depends on the game and the browser implementation. The post does not detail which controllers work out of the box.

Network requirements stay the same. NVIDIA recommends a wired connection or 5 GHz WiFi. The announcement does not provide new latency figures for the Firefox path.
