How does Android now move passkeys between password managers without files?
Your phone can now move passkeys from one password manager to another without downloading a file. Google announced the feature on September 10, 2026.
Why the old export method was risky
Moving passwords used to mean exporting them into an unencrypted text file. That file sat on the device readable by any app with storage access. Passkeys could not move at all — you had to recreate each one on every site and app. The new flow removes the file entirely.
How the transfer works step by step
Open the new password manager and choose the option to import from another provider. Android takes over and detects which managers are already installed. It shows only the ones that support the transfer protocol. Tap "Continue" and the system opens the source manager so you can select, review, and authorize the move. The data moves between apps in seconds.
No file is created.
Which password managers support it now
Google Password Manager supports the flow. So do 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane. More partners will follow. The feature runs on Android 8 and newer. The announcement does not say whether the transfer works across user profiles. It does not mention enterprise policies that might block the intent. No timeline for additional partners is given.
