How Does Guided Learning Change Student Outcomes in Google Classroom?

Google has added a new coaching tool to Google Classroom. It guides students through difficult topics step by step instead of giving direct answers.

The global rollout of teacher-led Guided Learning inside Google Classroom began on November 3, 2026. The feature grew out of two separate studies that measured how students behave when an AI coach replaces a search bar.

A half day in Tokyo

Researchers recruited more than 300 students at the University of Tokyo. Every participant received half a day to study a statistics lesson using standard online resources. Half the group also received access to Guided Learning in the Gemini app.

Students using only standard web tools improved their scores by 5.3 percentage points. Students with access to Guided Learning improved by 8.1 percentage points. That difference represents 1.5x higher learning gains in a single study session.

The session lasted half a day. Gains appeared modest but the timeframe was short.

Participants did not hunt for quick answers. They asked for practice quizzes, step-by-step help, and custom visual aids.

Four weeks in UK classrooms

A partnership with Ark brought a four-week pilot to three UK secondary schools. Teachers used Guided Learning in Google Classroom across four different subjects.

Post-pilot surveys and interviews showed teachers handled initial student questions effectively during independent work. That freed time for targeted one-on-one help.

The majority of surveyed students said they felt comfortable asking Gemini for help when stuck. Over half said it helped them solve problems on their own.

Teachers also flagged gaps. Some wanted clearer visibility into how students engaged with course materials. Others wanted to keep students focused on specific assignments during class time and reduce distractions. The team took this feedback back and made direct improvements: educator insights now show how students interacted with Guided Learning, and the ability for teachers to anchor conversations on uploaded curriculum has improved.

What ships today

Teacher-led Guided Learning now rolls out globally in Google Classroom. Teachers assign a Guided Learning experience that coaches students step-by-step on their course materials and tracks progress with actionable insights.
