What Halloween tricks does Google Photos offer this year?

Finding costumes with Ask Photos

Google Photos stores pictures and videos in the cloud. It works automatically.

The Halloween update adds a search tool called Ask Photos; you can type a question such as “What costumes have I worn on Halloween?” and the service returns matching memories because it indexes visual content and metadata across years, and the feature is limited to select countries for eligible users without a published list.

Swapping backgrounds

Ask Photos also performs edits; you can ask it to replace a background with a graveyard or haunted house, add eerie lighting, or remove photobombers, and the mechanism relies on generative fill that understands the scene and the request, with availability mirroring the search function for select countries and eligible users only, while the blog post does not define eligibility criteria. The generative fill works by analyzing the foreground and background, then synthesizing a new scene that matches the requested theme, and the process runs on device when possible but may use cloud resources for complex changes.

Moods and collages

Moods are preset filters.

“Night lights” gives an evening aesthetic suited for late night Halloween snaps and rolls out on Android globally, while iOS support is not mentioned; collage creation uses templates or custom borders in a color you choose, letting you pick favorite costume photos for the app to assemble them, and no limit on the number of images per collage is stated.

What remains unclear

The announcement omits rollout timing, repeats “select countries” without examples, leaves eligibility undefined, does not address iOS support for Moods, does not clarify file handling for edits, and gives no privacy or data‑processing details.
