What Does Spain's First AI Factory Mean for Startups Building on Sovereign Compute?
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center has moved its AI Factory Accelerator Programme from pilot to full operation. Startups now get direct access to sovereign compute resources through a facility that has already delivered more than 800 services since April 2025.
From Pilot to Full Operation
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center runs one of Europe's first AI factories. The accelerator programme started as a pilot. It now operates at full scale. Startups accepted into the programme receive sovereign compute access, technical support, and training. Many of these companies also belong to NVIDIA Inception. As of today, BSC AI Factory services are available through the NVIDIA Inception portal. The portal adds Deep Learning Institute courses, business mentoring, and venture capital connections. An upcoming extension of MareNostrum 5 will expand supercomputing access across European AI factories. The system runs on NVIDIA accelerated computing.
Three Champions Emerge from the Pilot
Three companies earned AI Champion recognition at the pilot demo day. Qatium builds a water-network platform. More than 250 utilities in 16 countries already use it. The platform now enters early production with Neural Water Intelligence technology. Proprietary AI models trained on MareNostrum 5 power the system. The stack includes NVIDIA cuGraph, PhysicsNeMo, and Nemotron open models. Water utilities make better operational decisions every day.
OneCareAI spun out of BSC research. The team used NVIDIA NIM microservices. Their technology spots hidden atrial fibrillation in seemingly normal ECGs. Clinicians can identify patients at risk of stroke before one occurs.
Avatia created a voice-first multi-agent system. Pharmaceutical companies get agentic coworkers. Sales representatives receive support. Doctors receive transparent, curated information about medicines. The right treatment reaches the right patient sooner. The system taps NVIDIA NIM microservices, the Nemotron 3 open model family, and the open source NeMo Curator library.
A Broader Cohort Tackles Different Problems
Seven other startups round out the cohort. Agrikola AI works on precision agriculture. Elna Health focuses on medical imaging and knowledge access. Lokutor develops speech services. Montevive AI targets enterprise security. Oppy builds sales intelligence. Pack2Earth creates sustainable packaging. Up2Smart operates across multiple domains. The breadth is striking. Preventing strokes. Detecting breast cancer subtypes before biopsy. Putting medical knowledge at doctors' fingertips faster. Replacing petroleum-based plastic with biobased compostable materials. Protecting crops with robots instead of chemicals.
Compute Infrastructure Expands
MareNostrum 5 serves as BSC's public infrastructure for scientific and technological innovation. An extension is coming. The upgrade will deliver supercomputing access through the BSC AI Factory and other AI factories across Europe. The timeline for the extension is not specified in the announcement. The current infrastructure already supports the training runs behind Qatium's Neural Water Intelligence. Sovereign compute remains the core offer. Startups keep data and models within European borders.
What the Portal Integration Changes
NVIDIA Inception members can now reach BSC AI Factory services without leaving the Inception portal. The integration reduces friction. A founder logs in once. Training courses, mentoring sessions, and compute allocations appear in one dashboard. The announcement does not say how many Inception members have already activated the access. It also does not disclose selection criteria for the accelerator programme beyond the pilot phase. The demo day recognized three champions. The total number of startups in the full programme is not stated.
