What does Windows 11 version 26H2 bring to the Release Preview Channel?

Microsoft has released Windows 11 version 26H2 to the Release Preview Channel. The build number is 26300.9278 and it arrives as an enablement package rather than a full reinstall.

The enablement package model changes how updates arrive

Windows 11 version 26H2 does not install like a traditional feature update. It ships as an enablement package (eKB). This means versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 all share a single servicing branch. They also share the same new features delivered through continuous innovation. Many capabilities in 26H2 may already feel familiar because they arrived gradually through monthly updates. The package simply flips switches that were already present in the codebase. No full reinstall required.

Commercial devices get features that were previously opt-in

For commercial customers, version 26H2 enables several experiences by default. These include Windows settings backup, app-specific actions from the taskbar, and some File Explorer enhancements. The blog defines a commercial device as one not running Home edition that is managed by an IT administrator, has a volume license key or commercial ID, or is joined to a domain. Home edition devices do not receive these defaults. IT admins can find deployment guidance in the "Get ready for Windows 11, version 26H2" document. Commercial Insiders can also deploy using Windows Update client policies and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Azure Marketplace images become available later on the same day.

Getting the update requires the seeker experience

Insiders in the Release Preview Channel install 26H2 through a "seeker" experience in Windows Update. The PC must meet Windows 11 hardware requirements. After updating, the machine continues to receive servicing updates through the normal monthly process. ISOs will appear on the Windows Insider ISO download page in the near term.

The 24H2 deadline creates urgency for some editions

Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 version 24H2 reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027. This split matters for organizations planning their move to 26H2. The blog does not state how many devices currently run each edition. It also does not specify whether the enablement package will be offered automatically to non-Insider machines after general availability later this calendar year.
