What does Pixel Watch 5 do when you stop breathing?

Google announced a new smartwatch called Pixel Watch 5. It arrives in stores on August 20.

The watch uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor. A dual-chip architecture adds 50 percent more RAM and a 12 percent CPU boost. Google says the combination makes the system 20 percent faster than the previous generation. Proactive suggestions from Gemini now process on the device. Core actions launch instantly even when the watch has no internet connection. You lift your wrist and speak. The watch starts a workout, sets a timer, or pulls a dinner reservation from Gmail. A double pinch confirms the action. The gesture works with one hand.

GPS that works between buildings

Pixel Watch 5 delivers 2x greater route accuracy compared to Pixel Watch 4 in the toughest environments. The watch traces satellite ray paths through 3D building models borrowed from Google Maps. It also taps a global network of weather reference stations in real time. Atmospheric corrections adjust satellite readings as conditions change. An internal study in July 2026 compared pre-production units against Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro. Sessions lasted three hours or less. Pixel Watch 5 outperformed both rivals on route map accuracy in dense urban canyons and covered trails.

Health Guardian and the breathing emergency

Continuous monitoring targets severe, persistent drops in oxygen saturation. Multimodal sensors — PPG, accelerometer, and barometer — feed on-device AI. Causes can include drug toxicity accidents, severe pneumonia, or choking. If a breathing emergency is detected and you are unresponsive, the watch can automatically call emergency services and transmit your exact location. The feature launches first in Europe. It is CE marked. The US FDA has not cleared or evaluated the product. The watch will not detect emergencies after you have been asleep for 30 minutes. Certain medical conditions such as sleep apnea and obesity may increase false positive triggers. Wrist tattoos and BMI can affect performance. Emergency calling depends on the watch or phone being charged and having cellular connectivity. Emergency services may not respond.

Three monthly trend summaries join the suite. Blood pressure trends, sleep breathing quality trends, and insulin resistance trends arrive after one month of wear. Models are trained on billions of minutes of sensor data from opted-in users. Validation uses gold-standard clinical measurements. The summaries are intended for general wellness and informational purposes only. They do not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition. They are not a prescreener for hypertension, diabetes, or sleep apnea. They do not provide real-time clinical readings. They should not be used to adjust medications or treatment plans. Pregnant individuals should not use them. Availability varies by region and device. A Google Health Premium subscription is required.
