What is Suzi and what does it change for long-range IoT?
The Connectivity Standards Alliance has published a new specification named Suzi. It operates in the Sub-1 GHz band and certification for products using it opened on September 2, 2026.
Why Sub-1 GHz changes reach
Lower frequencies diffract around obstacles instead of reflecting off them, allowing signals to bend around corners and penetrate dense materials. Operating in the Sub-1 GHz band gives Suzi extended range and ultra-low power consumption. It also provides superior wall and structure penetration compared to higher frequency alternatives. Range matters for real-world deployments.
Building on Zigbee security
Suzi inherits Zigbee's security model and mesh routing. Devices join a network without new key exchanges. The specification reuses the same attestation framework. Developers do not need to learn a new security stack.
Certification starts now
Product certification opened on September 2, 2026. Manufacturers can submit devices for compliance testing immediately.
Where the first devices will appear
Certified products will appear in the Alliance database. Buyers can filter for the Suzi badge. Smart homes gain sensors in basements and garages. Commercial buildings get occupancy tags across multiple floors. Industrial sites connect equipment across yards without repeaters. The specification targets places where Wi‑Fi and Thread struggle.
