What happens when the key to your bike lock has a battery a child can reach?
Giant Bicycle has recalled the LED-light keys that came with certain SureLock bike lock sets because the button batteries inside can be removed by children. About 3,630 sets were sold in the United States and another 1,395 in Canada between March 2023 and August 2026.

The key that lights up and the battery inside
The recalled item is a small black-and-white key with a built-in LED. It was packaged with pre-keyed SureLock bicycle lock sets. Each set includes the lock itself plus two or four regular keys without lights. Only the LED version manufactured after March 2023 falls under the recall.
The hazard is the battery compartment
Children can open it without tools. When a button cell or coin battery is swallowed it can cause serious internal chemical burns and death. The notice states that no injuries have been reported.
Which locks are affected and how to check
Eight model lines appear in the recall table. They carry names such as SURELOCK PROTECTOR 1 DT and SURELOCK FLEX KEY COIL 15. GIANT SURELOCK FLEX KEY COIL 12 is also listed. Serial numbers sit on the underside of the lock body. Each model line shows a range. For example SURELOCK PROTECTOR 1 DT runs from 00000 2303 to 00000 2607. The first four digits after the space indicate the manufacturing date code. Only locks with codes from 2303 onward are included. That code corresponds to March 2023.
What the standard requires and what was missing
Reese's Law mandates that button-cell and coin batteries in consumer products stay secured behind a compartment that requires a tool or two independent motions to open. The LED key fails that test. The packaging also lacks the warning labels the law requires. The mandatory standard took effect after the law passed. Products manufactured after the effective date must comply. Giant Bicycle imported these sets from China and sold them through authorized stores nationwide and online at giant-bicycles.com for between $25 and $65.
How the refund works
Owners should stop using the LED key immediately. They can take it to any authorized Giant retailer for a $5 refund. The retailer will ask for either the complete lock purchase or a photograph of the serial number on the lock. That photo verifies the unit falls inside the recalled serial ranges.
The lock and regular keys stay
They are not recalled. They can stay in use. The notice reminds consumers to dispose of button and coin cells through local hazardous-waste channels.
What the notice does not say
The recall covers only the LED key. It does not address whether the lock mechanism itself meets any other standard. The $5 amount is fixed; no replacement key is offered. The notice does not explain how many of the 3,630 units remain in active use. It also does not state whether Giant will change the design for future production.
