What happens when GitHub Copilot app triages Dependabot pull requests for you?
GitHub Copilot app now includes automations that review Dependabot pull requests automatically. The feature groups updates by risk level and checks CI status before developers start their day.
Setting up the automation
Dependabot pulls library updates into repositories through pull requests. Some updates are minor version bumps. Others are major version upgrades. Breaking changes appear without warning. Christopher Harrison, a Senior Developer Advocate at GitHub, wrote on August 26, 2026 that this repetitive review work suits automation. The post takes three minutes to read.
The GitHub Copilot app provides an automations feature. Users create a new automation from the app interface. Two initial settings define the automation. A descriptive name such as Daily Dependabot Triage identifies the purpose. A trigger determines when the automation runs. Available trigger options include Manual, Hourly, Daily, Weekly, and When an issue is created. For recurring maintenance tasks like Dependabot reviews, a daily schedule often works well. The automation can run in the cloud or on a local machine. Scheduling it before the workday begins means results wait at login. Natural language describes the task. An example prompt: Review the open Dependabot pull requests, group them by risk, identify the safe patch and minor version updates, verify that CI is passing for each pull request, and provide a short summary of the recommended next steps. The prompt can be customized to match a team's workflow. The automation selects a repository or project to analyze. After creation, users can choose Create and Run to test immediately instead of waiting for the scheduled run.
When the automation finishes, Copilot returns a summary instead of a list of individual pull requests. It might group safe patch updates together. It separates minor and major version upgrades. It identifies which pull requests have passing CI. It highlights dependencies that require additional investigation. Rather than interrupting the morning with dozens of small decisions, developers quickly identify which updates are ready to merge and which deserve closer attention.
If an update requires additional work, a new Copilot session can start from the automation results.
Every automation run is saved. The history shows when it ran, what actions it performed, and what results it produced. This makes automations transparent rather than a black box. Users can always review what happened. The feature turns repetitive work into background work. Dependabot triage is a good example of the kind of recurring task suited for automation. Describe the workflow once, choose when it should run, and let Copilot perform the repetitive steps automatically.
