What happens when a nuclear cleanup advisory board meets in South Carolina?

The Environmental Management Site-Specific Advisory Board for the Savannah River Site will meet on November 17, 2026. The session runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time at a facility in Aiken, South Carolina.

A citizen panel with a formal mandate

The board exists because Congress required it. The Federal Advisory Committee Act demands public notice of every meeting. The Department of Energy publishes that notice in the Federal Register.

This particular board serves the Savannah River Site, a former nuclear weapons complex now focused on environmental cleanup. Its members are not federal employees. They are citizens appointed to provide community-based advice. The Assistant Secretary or field managers can ask the board to weigh in on any Environmental Management program activity. Cleanup activities and environmental restoration fall in that scope. Waste management and disposition do too. Excess facilities, future land use, long-term stewardship, communications, and budget priorities round out the list. The board also helps satisfy public participation requirements under CERCLA, Federal Facility Agreements, Consent Orders, Consent Decrees, and Settlement Agreements.

How to attend and speak

The meeting takes place at the Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative. The address is 4345 Trolley Line Road, Aiken, South Carolina 29801. Anyone can walk in. No registration is required. A livestream runs on YouTube at the channel handle @SRSCAB.

Public comment gets fifteen minutes on the agenda. Each speaker receives a minimum of two minutes. Written comments submitted at least two working days before the meeting go to members and into the minutes. Comments arriving within two working days after the meeting also enter the minutes. The email for written submissions is srscitizensadvisoryboard@srs.gov. Special accommodations for disabilities require notice at least seven days in advance. The same email handles those requests.

Agenda items and meeting rules

The tentative agenda lists five blocks. Chair Update comes first. Agency Updates follow. Program Presentations to the Board come third. Board Business is fourth. Public Comments close the session. Topics may change. The most current agenda is available from Juanita Campbell at juanita.campbell@srs.gov.

The Designated Federal Officer runs the meeting. That officer ensures orderly conduct. Members of the public may not question board members or presenters. James Tanner in the Office of External Affairs is the contact for further information. His phone number is (803) 646-2167. His email is james.tanner@srs.gov. The mailing address is P.O. Box A, Aiken, SC 29802.
