What happens when developers build for a foldable iPhone that fits in your pocket?
Apple has released its first foldable iPhone called iPhone Duo. The device opens like a book to reveal an inner display 50 percent larger than the one on iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The screen that changes shape
Both displays share the same aspect ratio. Apps transition smoothly from the outer display to the inner display and scale proportionally. Users pick up right where they left off. The hinge lets the phone rest at multiple angles. A new hinge API tells apps the exact angle as the device opens and closes.
The inner display uses nano-texture glass. The outer display works when the phone is closed. When partially folded, the top half can show content while the bottom half shows controls. Developers use arrangement and reserved region APIs to split content across the fold or extend edge to edge. Scene accessories let an app show a teleprompter on the outer display while recording with the rear cameras on the inner side. New camera APIs also enable selfies with the rear cameras and the first under-display camera on iPhone.
Entertainment that moves with you
Netflix members scroll Clips on the outer display. They open the phone to keep watching on the large inner display. Clips switch seamlessly between vertical and horizontal view. Prime Video plays content on the top half when partially folded. X-Ray details showing cast and bonus content appear on the bottom half. Paramount+ offers richer playback controls and expanded browsing for shows and live channels. Apple TV also uses the larger canvas.
Sports fans follow MLB and PGA Tour with live games and highlights. Real-time scores, stats, and leaderboards sit on the larger display. The MLB app shows the live game on the upright half while real-time stats fill the half resting on the table. Fans never choose between the broadcast and the box score. The device props open on a table for hands-free viewing without a stand.
Productivity fits in a pocket
Split View arrives on iPhone for the first time. Two apps run side by side on the inner display. Microsoft Word and Outlook will roll out a desktop-class experience in coming weeks. Word places formatting tools alongside a document. Outlook puts the inbox next to a full message. Zoom turns the inner display into an immersive video conference room. Participants and shared content appear at the same time. Slack brings a whole workspace into view. Channels and threads stay visible at a glance. Salesforce shows more dashboards onscreen.
Fantastical shows calendars, tasks, and menus together. The inner display feels like the full Mac and iPad experience. Split View lets users look up contact details with Cardhop next to their inbox. Notewise brings notes, documents, and AI tools together in a single view. Things and Bear make task management simpler with more onscreen at once.
Creative tools and gaming
Detail uses the new Core AI framework to run AI models on device. Captions, filler-word removal, and audio enhancement happen fast and privately. Creators edit podcasts and interviews with video and transcript side by side. Instagram Edits shows the full creative studio including timeline, editing tools, and video. VLLO gives video creators more editing controls and footage onscreen at once.
A20 Pro and a custom vapor chamber give iPhone Duo up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro. Asphalt Legends players race more than 350 cars against up to seven online opponents. Detailed cars and dynamic lighting fill the inner display. Zenless Zone Zero adapts controls to each position. UnGodly, a dark fantasy RPG from Azra Games, adjusts its view for each display including a taller view of open worlds when closed. UnGodly launches on the App Store in November. Zenless Zone Zero updates for iPhone Duo next month.
On Apple Arcade, Sneaky Sasquatch delivers immersive experiences when opened and pick-up-and-play fun when closed. Retrocade does the same. Deck-Man turns iPhone Duo into a retro cassette player. Users open it to pick an album and insert the tape. They close it to start listening with music from Apple Music.
