What does Google's Back to School 2026 update change for students and teachers?

Google has published its annual back-to-school update for 2026. The announcement covers new AI features, free subscription offers, and search tools aimed at students and educators.

Free AI plans land on student accounts

College students in the United States can claim one year of Google AI Pro at no cost. The plan includes Gemini Spark, higher usage limits, and 5 TB of storage. Students outside the United States receive Google AI Plus free for 12 months. That tier brings increased usage limits, 400GB of storage, and bundled discounts on Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium. Eligibility verification happens at sign-up.

The offer appeared on August 19, 2026. Google posted six articles that day under the Back to School 2026 collection. One of them details the Gemini App giveaway. Another walks through five new Search capabilities. A third shows how NotebookLM is used at Florida State University.

Study notebooks and live research inside Gemini

A dedicated student hub now sits inside Gemini. Study notebooks run diagnostic quizzes to map strengths and knowledge gaps. The system then builds bite-sized study plans tied to the student's stated goals. Gemini Live adds the ability to request Deep Research reports and talk through them on the go. The feature turns a spoken prompt into a sourced briefing without leaving the voice interface.

Practice SAT tests are also available in the Gemini app at no cost. Full-length exams simulate the real test structure. Students can review answers and explanations after each section.

Search turns textbooks into interactive models

New Search features generate interactive visuals for difficult concepts. A practice quiz button appears for any subject, including standardized tests. Lens now walks through problems step by step when a student points the camera at a page. Notebooks inside Search let users organize projects and create custom files that persist across sessions.

The tools are described as safe by design and rooted in learning science. Google says the goal is to bring lessons to life in the classroom while supporting personalized study at home.

Teachers keep the lead with Classroom controls

Google Classroom receives teacher-led AI controls. Educators can tailor the AI experience to their specific curriculum. Progress tracking updates in real time. A connected Classroom app inside Gemini lets teachers draft lesson plans securely. The workflow keeps the educator in charge of what the model sees and suggests.

The announcement does not specify which regions receive the Classroom updates first. It also does not say how many schools currently use the connected Gemini app.
