What does the Windows 11 2026 Update change for your PC?
Microsoft has released Windows 11, version 26H2, also called the Windows 11 2026 Update. It arrives as a small enablement package for devices already running versions 25H2 or 24H2.
The update is not a full reinstall
The update arrives as an enablement package. Not a full reinstall. Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2 share a common servicing branch and codebase with version 26H2. Many required components are already on the device from monthly servicing updates. The enablement package activates those dormant features. Installation resembles a monthly update: a small download, a quick restart, and the transition completes. This approach enables a significantly faster update experience compared to a traditional operating system upgrade.
It just works.
How the rollout reaches your machine
Version 26H2 is now available for eligible devices running versions 25H2 and 24H2. To get it early, open Settings, go to Windows Update, and turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they're available. Once the device is eligible, the option to download and install appears. Microsoft uses a controlled feature rollout. During rollout, safeguard holds can be placed on devices where a known compatibility issue could impact the update experience. Availability expands over time, and progress is published through the Windows release health hub.
Commercial and education channels differ
Commercial and education customers can deploy version 26H2 through Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center. Existing management tools, update rings, and policies continue to work. Deployment practices also remain unchanged. Microsoft recommends targeted deployments to validate applications and devices. Business-critical workflows should also be validated before expanding broadly. Downloads in the Microsoft 365 admin center and similar channels can be delayed.
Support lifecycle resets with this install
Installing version 26H2 resets the support lifecycle for supported editions. Home and Pro editions receive 24 months of support. Enterprise and Education editions receive 36 months. The annual feature update cadence continues with a new release in the second half of each calendar year. Select features initially disabled by default in version 25H2 become enabled by default in version 26H2. Guidance for planning and deployment lives in the Windows IT Pro Blog.
The announcement does not list which specific features flip from disabled to enabled.
