What changes when earbuds clip on instead of sealing in?

Samsung Electronics has released Galaxy Buds On, its first open-ear earbuds that clip onto the ear rather than sealing the canal. The design keeps the wearer aware of surroundings while adding hands-free AI controls and a speaker system tuned for bass.

The clip-on shape and why it stays put

Galaxy Buds On rests on the cartilage with a flexible band that wraps behind the ear. The band angle adjusts so the contact point matches different ear shapes. Samsung says the geometry came from data analysis and simulations involving a wide range of ear shapes. The result is a fit that survives vigorous head movements without slipping.

A runner hears bicycles and other runners approaching from behind while music plays. The open architecture means ambient sound enters naturally. No transparency mode needs to switch on.

Voice, gestures, and the AI layer

A tap on the back of either bud starts playback. Saying "Hey Google, let's talk Live" launches Gemini Live on a paired Galaxy AI-enabled smartphone. The assistant can recommend running routes and read distances aloud. Voice commands also handle music: "Next song" or "Previous song" to switch tracks. "Volume up" and "Volume down" adjust the level. No touch required.

Head Gestures add another layer. Nod to answer a call. Shake to decline. The same motions check message notifications and dismiss alarms. Quick Voice Memo activates with a press-and-hold on the back of a bud. Recording starts immediately. Later, asking Bixby about tasks reads the saved memo aloud. The press-and-hold gesture must be configured in Settings first. Samsung Voice Recorder and Bixby apps are required.

Call clarity without isolation

Three microphones sit alongside a bone conduction-based Voice Pickup Unit Sensor. A machine learning-based solution processes the combined input. The system isolates the speaker's voice and suppresses background noise. Samsung calls this Intelligent Clear Call.

The earbuds remain comfortable after hours of wear without pressing on the ear. Call quality holds in crowded subway stations. The open design does leak sound. Leakage depends on playback volume, ear shape, and ambient noise levels. Quiet rooms make it more noticeable. Audio Leakage Reduction 1 technology minimizes the escape but does not eliminate it. Actual performance varies with environment and fit.

What the package assumes you already have

Every AI feature requires a Galaxy AI-enabled device. The list of compatible models is not in the announcement. Quick Voice Memo needs Samsung Voice Recorder and Bixby installed. Head Gestures work out of the box. Gemini Live access depends on Google's service availability in the user's region. The press-and-hold gesture for memos is off by default. Users must enable it in the wearable settings menu. Battery life figures are not disclosed. Charging case details are not disclosed. Price and release date are not disclosed.
