What changes in the new Surface Pro 12-inch and Laptop 13-inch with Snapdragon X2 Plus?

Microsoft unveiled updated versions of its smallest Surface Pro and Surface Laptop at the Snapdragon Summit on September 23, 2026. Both devices now run on the Snapdragon X2 Plus processor and arrive alongside a new Surface Mouse that adds haptic feedback to every click.

The chip and what it shifts

The Snapdragon X2 Plus replaces the Snapdragon X Plus that powered the first editions of these two models. Microsoft says its engineers worked with Qualcomm during silicon development so the chip fits the thermal and power envelope of fanless, thin chassis. The result is a set of generation-over-generation claims measured against the 1st Edition devices: up to 17 percent faster in Office productivity workloads, up to 18 percent more efficient battery performance, more than 60 percent faster graphics, and up to 95 percent faster local AI inferencing on the NPU. Those figures come from UL Procyon Office Productivity, 3DMark Steel Nomad Lite, and Procyon AI benchmarks run by Microsoft in September 2026. Performance varies by configuration, workload, and settings.

The company frames the upgrade as more than a processor swap. Supported AI experiences can run on the device, in the cloud, or both. That means lower latency, fewer cloud calls, and data that stays on the machine when the workload allows it. The announcement does not quantify how many current Windows features already use that local path.

Surface Pro 12-inch: fanless tablet that becomes a laptop

The Pro 12-inch remains the most portable Surface Pro. It is fanless, weighs the same as before, and switches between tablet and laptop modes with the Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard and the magnetically stored Surface Slim Pen. Both accessories are sold separately. The new model adds a 25 percent brighter 500-nit PixelSense touchscreen and a Black color option alongside the existing finishes. The enclosure uses 86 percent recycled content by weight; the device excluding the power supply contains 3.7 percent recycled content, including 100 percent recycled rare earth metals in magnets, 100 percent recycled tin in solder, and 100 percent recycled copper and gold in the motherboard. Validation was performed by Underwriters Laboratories using UL ECVP-2809-2.

Battery life gains an extra hour of active web browsing in Microsoft's test. That test discharged a preproduction unit with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB storage while cycling through twelve popular sites across multiple tabs at 150 nits with auto-brightness off. Real-world battery life varies significantly with settings and usage.

A new app called Microsoft Ink Canvas ships pre-installed. It is a pen-first, AI-powered canvas for sketching, annotating, generating images, and summarizing text. The idea is to capture rough thoughts in handwriting before they become a document or a prompt, giving Copilot richer context. Ink Canvas requires Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher, integrated touch support, and a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, or Pro subscription for AI features. AI usage limits and minimum age limits apply. The app will also be downloadable from the Microsoft Store on other supported Surface and Windows devices starting October 13.

Pricing for the Pro 12-inch starts at $1,149.99 MSRP. Availability begins October 13 in select markets. Colors, sizes, finishes, and processors may vary by store, market, and configuration.

Surface Laptop 13-inch: classic clamshell refined

The Laptop 13-inch keeps the full-size backlit keyboard, precision touchpad, premium aluminum body, and taller 3:2 PixelSense touchscreen. It is also fanless. The display is 25 percent brighter at 500 nits. A Black color option joins the lineup. Microsoft quotes 22.5 hours of battery life for local video playback. That figure varies significantly based on usage, settings, and other factors. The screen measures 13 inches diagonally as a standard rectangle; actual viewable area is less due to rounded corners.

The same Snapdragon X2 Plus drives the performance claims: up to 17 percent faster Office productivity, up to 18 percent more efficient battery performance, more than 60 percent faster graphics, and up to 95 percent faster local AI inferencing compared to the 1st Edition with Snapdragon X Plus. Benchmarks and conditions mirror those used for the Pro.

MSRP for the Laptop 13-inch starts at $1,199. Availability begins October 13 in select markets. Configuration and color availability vary by store and market.

Surface Mouse: a click you can feel

The new Surface Mouse adds haptic feedback. The company describes it as a small, purposeful physical response at the moment a click registers, a window snaps into place, or an object aligns. It is subtle by design but noticeable within seconds. The mouse uses a redesigned ambidextrous shape for all-day comfort, a customizable action button for Copilot and everyday shortcuts, and Bluetooth 6.0 for pairing with multiple devices. Customization requires the Surface app on Windows; functionality varies by operating system.

The mouse contains 30.8 percent recycled content. Post-consumer recycled plastic ranges from 9 percent to 50 percent by component: 50 percent in the Top Case Inner, Bottom Case, Skirt, Battery Door, and Top Button Frame; 25 percent in the Battery Case and Power Pairing Button; 9 percent in the Light Pipe. Validation was performed by Underwriters Laboratories using UL ECVP-2809-2.

Surface Mouse starts at $79.99 and will be available in Black and Platinum beginning October 13 in select markets.

Commercial availability and security baseline

All three products will be sold to commercial customers through Surface for Business starting October 13. The Pro 12-inch will offer an optional 5G configuration — one of the most requested additions for this form factor. Support may vary by market and carrier.

Security and manageability are built from chip to cloud. The list includes Secured-core PC safeguards, Microsoft Pluton with TPM 2.0, and Surface UEFI built with Secure Patina Core and Project Mu open-source components available through the Open Device Partnership. IT tools include Surface Management Portal, Surface Support Portal, Surface IT Toolkit, and Surface Repair Tool for managing, protecting, supporting, and recovering devices across their lifecycle.

Purchasing through Microsoft Store

Buyers who shop at Microsoft Store can get up to $400 in additional value with an eligible device trade-in. The offer is valid with purchase of any new Surface Pro or Surface Laptop made between August 3 and September 30, 2026, after trade-in of a qualifying device and submission of the online claim plus proof of purchase during the promotion period, while supplies last. It is available only in Microsoft Store online in the United States. Terms, conditions, steps, and requirements are detailed in the Microsoft Store Trade-in Program.

Other benefits include fast free shipping, 60-day free returns, flexible payment and financing options, expert support, and a one-year limited hardware warranty. The warranty covers the device for one year from the date of original purchase from Microsoft or an authorized reseller, without prejudice to any statutory rights under local law. Restrictions apply.
