What changes when Google Translate keeps running after you lock your phone?
Google Translate now lets Android users keep live translation active while switching apps or locking the screen. iOS users gain the option to hear translations through the phone earpiece instead of headphones.
The update arrives on September 4, 2026. Sasha Kapur, product manager for Google Translate, announced two changes that affect how the app behaves during long conversations.
Background mode on Android
More than a third of live translation sessions now last longer than five minutes. That statistic drove the first change. Android users can start a live translation session, then open another app or press the power button to lock the screen. The translation continues in the background. Audio keeps flowing. The feature works across the 70-plus languages that live translate already supports. iOS support is coming soon. The announcement does not give a date.
The mechanism relies on Android's background audio APIs. When the app moves to background, it retains the microphone stream and the translation pipeline. The screen lock does not interrupt the audio session. Battery impact is not discussed in the announcement. Neither is the maximum duration a session can survive while backgrounded. The post also does not say whether background mode works with all language pairs or only a subset.
Earpiece mode on iOS
The second change targets iOS. Users can now hold the phone to their ear and hear translations through the earpiece speaker. This works without headphones. The feature already existed on Android. The announcement frames it as useful for noisy airports and crowded tours. The earpiece route is mono and band-limited compared to headphones. No audio quality metrics are provided.
The implementation uses iOS audio session categories that route playback to the receiver instead of the bottom speaker. When a live translation session starts, the app requests the appropriate route. If headphones are connected, they take priority. The announcement does not mention whether the earpiece mode works during background operation on iOS.
What remains unanswered
The post does not say how many users run sessions longer than five minutes. It only gives the proportion. It does not say if the earpiece mode on iOS supports the same 70-plus languages. It does not mention offline support. It does not mention whether background translation persists across network changes. It does not mention privacy indicators while the microphone runs in background. The rollout is global for both features. The Android background mode is live now. The iOS earpiece mode is live now. The iOS background mode has no timeline.
