What changes when a MacBook Pro gets a tandem OLED screen and touch?

Apple has released a new MacBook Pro. It uses a tandem OLED screen called PROLED XDR and adds a touch layer built into the panel.

The screen is two light-emitting layers stacked together

Each pixel turns on and off independently. That design produces deep blacks beside brilliant highlights without the blooming and halos typical of backlit displays. The panel reaches up to 1000 nits sustained full-screen brightness and up to 2000 nits peak HDR and SDR brightness. Contrast ratio is 10,000,000:1. Both P3 and Adobe RGB color spaces are covered. A display engine controls color and luminance of every pixel at the sub-millisecond level, compensating for content, pixel use, temperature, and environment all at once. It also monitors each pixel's usage to preserve image quality over time. An antireflective coating helps readability in direct sunlight. A nano-texture option further reduces reflections and glare.

Touch lives inside the panel not on top of it

The sensor is built directly into the display. That reduces latency so you feel like you are touching the content itself. Scroll, pinch, rotate, draw, and more work right onscreen. Product designers can interact with a 3D prototype directly. Developers can test how touch will feel in their iOS apps. Music producers can adjust faders and play virtual instruments with their fingers. Everyday tasks like scrolling a Pages document or pinching to zoom in a photo feel as intuitive as they do on a trackpad. Double-tap a window to fill the screen or flick it precisely into place.

Dynamic Island sits at the top of the screen

It is the new home for Spotlight and Live Activities. Just like on iPhone, it is a quick way to see and interact with important information. You can search your Mac, ask a question, track an activity, or control your music — all in one easy-to-reach place. Spotlight finds documents, images, contacts, and emails. Live Activities show real-time updates: pick up a call, accept an AirDrop request, track a food delivery, or pause a song with a tap. Siri AI is a conversational assistant with new capabilities. It is available in English. Usage limits may apply.

M5 Pro and M5 Max chips power the machine

Both deliver phenomenal single- and multithreaded CPU performance and faster unified memory. A Neural Accelerator built into each GPU core speeds AI tasks. Storage is up to twice as fast and configurable up to 16TB. A redesigned thermal architecture backs it all. M5 Pro offers up to 10-core CPU and up to 20-core GPU with up to 64GB unified memory. M5 Max offers up to 14-core CPU and up to 40-core GPU with up to 128GB unified memory. The GPU features enhanced shader cores and a third-generation ray-tracing engine. Dynamic Caching optimizes on-chip memory to significantly increase GPU utilization.

Performance numbers come from Apple's own benchmarks

The 14-inch model with M5 Pro is 10.9x faster than M1 Pro in LLM prompt processing and 7.6x faster in text-to-image generation. Maxon Redshift render performance is 5.1x faster than M1 Pro. DaVinci Resolve Studio render is 4.9x faster. Xcode project build is 2.2x faster. Cyberpunk 2077 ray tracing is 1.5x faster than M4 Pro. The 16-inch model with M5 Pro shows similar multipliers. M5 Max pushes further: 12.0x faster than M1 Max in LLM prompt processing on the 14-inch, 8.1x in text-to-image, 5.0x in Maxon Redshift, 5.3x in DaVinci Resolve, 2.1x in Xcode, 1.4x in Cyberpunk ray tracing versus M4 Max. The 16-inch M5 Max reaches 10.6x, 7.3x, 5.0x, 5.0x, 2.4x, and 1.4x respectively.

Battery life reaches up to 24 hours

All models provide the same performance whether plugged in or on battery. That is up to 13 more hours than Intel-based MacBook Pro. Fast charge reaches 50 percent in 30 minutes. The 14-inch model weighs 3.0 pounds. The 16-inch model weighs 4.0 pounds. Colors are Space Black and Silver.

Ports include three Thunderbolt 5 and HDMI

A MagSafe 3 port, an SDXC card slot, and a headphone jack round out the physical connections. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 run on the Apple-designed N1 wireless chip. Models with M5 Pro support up to three external displays over a single Thunderbolt 5 port. Models with M5 Max support up to four.

Audio and camera get a redesign

Six speakers with an all-new woofer design deliver 50 percent deeper bass. Updated tweeters shape sound dispersion for clarity. Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos wrap you in immersive sound. A studio-quality three-mic array with Voice Isolation keeps your voice crisp. The 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View keeps you in frame during video calls. Advanced video stabilization lets you touch the screen without causing your camera feed to shake.

Security starts with the Secure Enclave

A dedicated subsystem separate from the main processor keeps encryption keys and biometric data fully isolated. Touch ID unlocks the Mac, signs in to apps, and makes secure payments. The Passwords app stores passwords and passkeys with end-to-end encryption. FileVault encrypts files without user intervention. Find My locates a misplaced Mac.

Pre-orders open November 6

The page marks availability starting 11.6 November 6th. Pricing details are not listed in the source. The comparison table shows the previous MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED display at 1600 nits peak HDR brightness and 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, P3 only, no touch, starting at 3.5 pounds for the 14-inch. The new model drops weight, adds touch, doubles contrast, adds Adobe RGB, and raises peak brightness to 2000 nits for both HDR and SDR.
